National Engineers Day 2021

"Engineers like to solve problems. If there are no problems handily available, they will create their own problems."

— Scott Adams

Every year September 15 is celebrated as Engineers’ Day in India to commemorate one of India’s finest engineer, Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya. Engineers are known to be the backbone of every nation. They play a key role in every stream and are often neglected. However, their role is often neglected instead of being celebrated. Engineer's Day aims to change just that. Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya is considered one of the foremost nation-builders, creating marvels upon which modern India was built. He was referred as the ‘precursor of economic planning in India’, according to the Institution of Engineers India (IEI). M Visvesvaraya is also known as ‘VM Sir’ due to his various contributions to the field of engineering and being a pioneer of education.

Globally, Engineer’s Day is celebrated on different dates of the year. The World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) had designated 4th March as the date for celebrating World Engineer’s Day in 1996. However, it was internationally proclaimed by UNESCO and finally accepted globally just last year. While International Engineer’s Day was recently declared in 2020, India has been celebrating its engineers for the last five decades.

The majority of us Indians have always had a lot of respect for civil and mechanical engineering, thus, having celebrated our National Engineer’s Day since 1968. The reason why we have been so grateful to our engineers is due to them we have experienced enormous economic and architectural development in the last few decades.

When is Engineers' Day 2021?

Engineer's Day 2021 will be celebrated on September 15. This annual commemoration marks the birth of Mokshagundam Visvesaraya on September 15, 1861. Every year, this celebration helps engineers to remember why they chose this field, how they help build the future, and more.

History of Engineers' Day

Engineers' Day was declared by the Indian Government in 1968 on the date of birth of Dr. Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya. After which Engineers Day was celebrated on 15th September every year. In fact, on September 15, 1860, Visvesvaraya was born in the Kolar district of Mysore (Karnataka). As an engineer, Dr. Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya has contributed to the construction of several dams in the country, including the Krishna Raj Sagar dam in Mysore, a dam in Khadakwasla reservoir of Pune and Tigra dam in Gwalior, etc. Not only that, Dr. Visvesvaraya was given full credit for making Hyderabad City. He had created a flood protection system there, after which he became renowned all over India. He played an important role in developing a system for the protection of Visakhapatnam port from sea erosion.

His name is amongst one of the most prominent builders of India in the 20th century. In his tenure of being the Diwan of Mysore from 1912 to 1918, he completely transformed the state into a place which was then known as a Model State. Sir MV is known as Father of Modern Mysore for his numerous contributions in industrial, economic and social projects.

Who was Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya?

Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya was born (15 September 1861) in Muddenahalli, Karnataka, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Madras. Later on, he finished studying civil engineering from the Pune College of Science with his first major project being the installation of an irrigation system powered by water floodgates at the Khadakwasla reservoir.

This patented irrigation system allowed food supply and storage to become more efficient, being adopted later at one of the largest reservoirs in Asia at that time, Mysore’s Krishnaraja Dam and even Gwalior’s Tigra Dam. He also served as the 19th Diwan of Mysore and was responsible for founding The State Bank of Mysore, Bangalore Agricultural University, Mysore Iron and Steel Works, and many more organisations that provided jobs to thousands even then.

Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya was largely responsible for laying the foundation for one of the first engineering colleges in India, the Government Engineering College of Bangalore. This institute was founded in 1917 and is now known as the University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE). He was also knighted in 1915 by King George V and assumed the role of commander of the British Indian Empire. This great man started his career spanning more than 34 years as an assistant engineer in the Government of Bombay’s Public Works Department. Soon, he became the chief engineer responsible for the construction of Krishna Raja Sagara Dam in Mysore. With his extensive contribution to Mysore, he was eventually known as the Father of Modern Mysore state.

He was involved in multiple modern civil engineering projects during his career and finally retired as one of the board directors of Tata Steel after serving this Indian conglomerate from 1927 to 1955. He has multiple honorary doctoral degrees from various universities across India and was recognised as the leading personality in science and engineering by well-reputed organisations.

He passed away in 1962 but his legacy remains and India will continue celebrating him through National Engineer’s Day.

Why is Engineers' Day celebrated?

Engineer’s Day is celebrated to feel proud of the engineers of our country and to celebrate their achievements in each and every field of science and technology. In the economic progress and development of a country engineers play a very crucial role and contribution. The day is devoted to celebrate the past accomplishments of engineers and to glorify the future trends in engineering. The day shows the significance and importance of engineers at every step of our daily life.

Engineers' Day 2021 Theme

The theme for Engineers' Day 2021 is 'Engineering for A Healthy Planet - Celebrating the UNESCO Engineering Report'. Last year, the theme was ‘Engineers for a Self-Reliant India.’ Newsletter items, social media broadcasts and promotional campaigns play a key role in deciding the theme for Engineer's Day every year. This year it will focus on celebrating the launch of the 2nd UNESCO Engineering Report 'Engineering for Sustainable Development : Delivering on the Sustainable Development Goals'.

Significance of Engineers' Day

Engineers are the pillars of our society, being at the forefront of working to improve our digital and physical infrastructure. On average, India produces 15,00,000 engineers every year. Our country celebrates its National Engineers' Day on the 15 of September every year. A day indeed is very important to celebrate our engineers. For every small need of a man, he is very dependent on technology today. Technology drives our world. Engineers implement technologies to create a new, emerging world order. Science and innovation gained importance right from fire and the wheel at the earliest stages of civilization. From there began nascent engineering creations, gradually creating analogue wonder systems.

With the IT revolution in the 1980’s, the concept of digitalization took over the world. Digital transformation digitally enabled operations, and on the whole, a digital world rules the roost today. All this is possible due to the advent of modern engineering principles. Without engineers, mixers and blenders wouldn’t rule our kitchens. Time is testimony that the most excellent engineers in the world have created the best marvels around the globe.

Our lives have been simplified in various ways by the engineers. Simplicity have been brought to every complex process and all this is only because of our supremely talented engineers. Everything is online these days including online transactions, online learning, online businesses and many more and all these are made possible by engineers only. They are coming with innovations and better versions of products every day. That is why it is relevant to celebrate our engineers and their achievements on engineering day.

How to Celebrate Engineers' Day?

Events happen globally, starting from conferences, lectures, discussions, and technical symposiums. Student forums organize various professional activities and talks at their educational institutions. Seminars on specialised topics and meetings with highly revered technical dignitaries are specialities of the day. Engineers Day is also celebrated at engineering companies by hosting week-long workshops, mentorship programs and award ceremonies. On a worldwide scale, celebrations include showcasing products, engineering site visits, campaigns, community partnership events and round table discussions.

Essay competitions for young students showcasing budding talents in technological innovations are some of the other kinds of events held. India’s government exhibits engineering product display, the technological revolution in the form of movies and film shows to make it attractive to the next generations.

Engineers need to be awarded and remembered for their achievements on this special day. Felicitation ceremonies form an essential aspect of Engineers’ day celebrations. Engineers not only change the world around them by working on national projects (public interest) but also bring in more foreign companies looking for skilled human assets into their country, thus expanding our future scope and economy.
