Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi or Vinayaka Chavithi is a 10-day grand celebration that is ushered in with a lot of zeal and fervour. While it's a special and significant festival for the Hindu community, it's celebrated with equal enthusiasm by other communities as well and sees celebrations all around the country. The day is celebrated to honour the birth of Lord Ganesha, who is one of the most adored of all Gods. Lord Ganesha is honoured as the God of wisdom, prosperity, good fortune and the destroyer of evils. Hence, he is also called 'Vighnaharta'. It is also said that pious wishes and ardent devotions get fulfilled when one prays to Lord Ganesha on this auspicious day.

History

The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi finds its origin in the Maratha reign, with Chatrapati Shivaji starting the festival. The belief lays in the story of the birth of Ganesha, the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Although there are various stories attached to his birth, the one most relevant is shared here. Goddess Parvati was the creator of Ganpati. She, in the absence of Lord Shiva, used her sandalwood paste to create Ganesha and put him to guard while she had gone for bathing. While she was gone, Lord Shiva got into a fight with Ganesha as he did not allow him to enter, as per his mother’s orders. Enraged, Lord Shiva cut off Ganesha's head. When Parvati saw this sight, she took the form of Goddess Kali and threatened to destroy the world. This worried everyone and they requested Lord Shiva to find a solution and calm the rage of Goddess Kali. Shiva then ordered all his followers to immediately go and find a child whose mother has her back towards her child in negligence and bring his head. The first child seen by the followers was that of an elephant and they, as ordered, cut his head and brought to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva immediately placed the head on Ganesha's body and brought it to life again. The rage of Maa Kali was calmed and Goddess Parvati was overwhelmed, once again. All the Lords blessed Ganesha and the day is today celebrated for the same reason.

Mythology

According to tradition, one should not look at the moon during some specific times on Ganesh Chaturthi as it is believed if a person looks at the moon, he’ll be cursed and will be accused of theft. The belief originated from the incident from Lord Krishna, who was falsely accused of stealing a valuable jewel. It was Sage Narada who suggested that Lord Krishna must’ve seen the moon on Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi (the occasion that Ganesh Chaturthi falls on) and was cursed because of it. Therefore, it is believed, anyone who saw the moon during a specific time in Ganesh Chaturthi would be cursed in a similar way.

Significance of Anant Chaturdashi

The immersion of the idol takes place on the day of Anant Chaturdashi. The word Anant means infinite or eternal energy or immortality, whereas Chaturdashi means 14th. Thus, the occasion falls on the 14th day of the Bhadrapada month of the Hindu calendar and on it Lord Ananta, which is the incarnation of Lord Vishnu is also worshipped. Immersion of the idol has a belief attached to it, Hindus believe in the concept of constant change in the world which construes what it is there today in one form or the other will tomorrow be formless. The concept of immersion is thus a reminder of this belief.

Ganesh Chaturthi Importance

It is believed that devotees who pray to Ganesha are able to fulfil their wishes and desires. So, the main essence of Ganesh Chaturthi is that devotees who pray to him are set free of sins and it leads them on the path of knowledge and wisdom. Historically, the festival has been celebrated since the time of King Shivaji. It was during India's freedom struggle that Lokmanya Tilak changed Ganesh Chaturthi from a private celebration to a grand public festival where people from all castes of the society can come together, pray and be united. Over the years with growing environmental awareness, people have started celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi in an environmentally friendly way. This includes-getting Ganesha idols made of natural clay/mitti and using only flowers and natural items for decorating the pandals.

Celebration

Ganesh Chaturthi preparations commence from almost a month before the festival. The celebrations last for around ten days (from Bhadrapad Shudh Chaturthi to Ananta Chaturdashi). On the first day a clay idol of Lord Ganesha is installed in homes. Homes are decorated with flowers. Temples witness the visit of large number of devotees. Poojas are performed and bhajans are chanted. Often, families gather together to celebrate the festival. Localities organize and arrange for pandals and install large idols of Lord Ganesha to celebrate the festival with friends and family. On the final day of the celebrations, the idol of Lord Ganesha is taken on the streets. People exhibit their enthusiasm and joy in the form of dancing and singing on the streets along with the idol. The idol is finally immersed in the river or sea. The day witnesses a large number of devotees expressing their happiness and offering their prayers.

Puja Timings

One of the biggest and most auspicious festivals in India, Ganesh Chaturthi will be celebrated on Friday, September 10 this year and the 11 day celebration will conclude on September 21. According to the Hindu calendar, it is celebrated on Chaturthi Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada.

Shubh Muhurat : The tithi begins at 12:18 am on September 10 and ends at 9:57 pm on the same day. On this day, people perform their religious duties of cleaning the temple in their house, offering durva ghas, ladoos and modaks to Lord Ganesh and completing the worship with an aarti. The most appropriate time for the Ganesh Puja is Madhyana Kaala and the shubh muhurat is between 11:03 am and 1:33 pm.

Puja Vidhi : Commonly referred to as Vighnaharta, which means an almighty that removes all obstacles, Ganesha is revered dearly. Lord Ganesh’s Idol, water pot Panchamrit, Red Cloth, Roli, Akshat, Kalava Janeoo, Cardamom, Coconut, Chandi ka vark, Supari, Laung, Panchmeva, Ghee Kapur, Chaukee and Gangajal are needed for worshipping.

Festival Dishes

Although there are a large number of sweets offered to Lord Ganesha during the pujan, but Modak is known to be the lord’s favourite sweet and is therefore one of the main dishes made on this day. Other dishes include Karanji, Laddu, Barfi and Pede.

Rituals of Vinayaka Chavithi

There are four main rituals which are performed during the 10-day long festival. They are namely — Pranapratishhtha, Shhodashopachara, Uttarpuja, and Ganpati Visarjan.

The excitement of Ganesh Chaturthi settles in weeks before the festival actually begins. Artisans start preparing clay idols of Ganesha in different poses and sizes.

The Ganesha idols are installed in beautifully decorated 'pandal' at homes, temples or localities. The statue is also decorated with flowers, garlands and lights. A ritual called Pranapratishhtha is observed where a priest chants mantra to invoke life in the diety.

Prayers are then offered to Ganesha's idol in 16 different ways. This ritual is called Shhodashopachara.

People celebrate by singing or playing religious songs, dancing to drum beats and by lighting up fireworks – all of which add to the festive mood.

The Uttarpuja ritual is then performed which is about bidding farewell to Ganesha with deep respect. This is followed by Ganpati Visarjan, a ceremony wherein the statue is now immersed in water. While carrying the statue to the sea and while immersing it, people generally chant in the Marathi language 'Ganapati Bappa Morya, Purchya Varshi Laukariya' which means 'Goodbye Lord, please come back next year'.

Ganesh Chaturthi is a fun-filled festival in honour of Lord Ganesha. People all over India thoroughly enjoy it. All the devotees of Lord Ganesha come together irrespective of their differences of caste and colour. Ganesh Chaturthi spreads joy and unites people all over.
