Rava Upma Recipe

Hello my dear readers, I hope you all are doing well. 🙂 Today I have come up with a new recipe called Rava Upma / Sooji Upma / সুজির হালুয়া.

The Rava Upma recipe I am going to share here is adapted from my mom’s recipe and continues to be a favorite in my home. The ingredients used to flavor the rava give it a deliciously satisfying taste that will make this dish one of your new favorite breakfasts or evening snack.

Read the blog from beginning to end. I hope you will understand the recipe very easily. So let's get started!!!

• What is Rava Upma

Upma is a flavorful South Indian breakfast dish made from rava or cream of wheat.

This traditional dish involves cooking roasted rava in water that has been flavored by Ghee or Oil, Cashews, Urad dal (lentils), Chana Dal (Husked Chickpeas), Onion, Ginger and additional herbs and spices. Sugar can be added for a mildly sweet and savory dish. This was the traditional method but today I am going to share my own method (not exactly my own method, you can say my mom's method).

There is nothing to fear. It is a very simple method. I'm 100% sure thet you will not have any difficulty in understanding it, and if there is any difficulty, then you can ask me in the comment box. I'll be there for you.

Full of warmth, flavor and deliciousness, this upma tastes so good. So why not take a break from that daily boring breakfast and try something new?

The main ingredient in any Upma recipe is Rava. Also called Sooji in Hindi & Bengali and Cream of Wheat or Semolina in English, it is simply granulated wheat.

• Ingredients

1. Rava / Sooji / সুজি

2. Refined Oil / রিফাইন্ড তেল

3. Finely Chopped Onions / পেঁয়াজ কুচি

4. Chopped Green Chilies / কাঁচালঙ্কা কুচি

5. 4-5 Curry Leaves / ৪-৫ টি কারিপাতা

6. Salt (According your taste) / নুন (আপনার স্বাদ অনুযায়ী)

7. Sugar (According your taste) / চিনি (আপনার স্বাদ অনুযায়ী)

8. Water (According to the Rava Quantity) / জল (সুজির পরিমাণ অনুযায়ী)

• Total Preparation Time

It will take minimum 15-20 minutes to prepare and be served on your plate. It can be called a shortcut upma recipe.

• How to make Rava Upma

Just follow the instructions step by step I'm giving below —

🔸Step-1 : Heat a pan or kadai first. Then add 2-3 tablespoon Refined Oil.

🔸Step-2 : When the oil gets a little hot add the finely chopped onions. Sauté the onions until they soften and become translucent on a low to medium-low heat.

🔸Step-3 : Then add the chopped green chillies and curry leaves. Mix them well & sauté for a few seconds.

🔸Step-4 : Then add 1-1.5 cup rava in the mixture. Begin to fry the rava. Stir often while fryting the rava. The rava or sooji grains should become fragrant and start to look dry, separate and crisp. You can add some salt in this time. Don’t brown the rava too much or it will taste bitter.

🔸Step-5 : Then add 2.5 cups water to this rava mixture. Add salt as required. Mix well and check the taste of water. It should be a bit salty but not too much. In case if the salt becomes less, you can add some salt. Then add 1 tablespoon sugar. Sugar is necessary you can't skip it, as we prefer a slight sweet taste in the upma.

🔸Step-6 : Stir again. On a medium to high flame, heat the water and let it come to a rolling boiling. The rava grains will absorb water, swell and get cooked. Make sure to keep stirring to prevent lump formation. When you see the whole water gets absorbed by Rava switch off the gas flame.

And yes you're done!

The rava is cooked well and your upma is ready to serve. You can garnish it with some curry leaves or coriander leaves.

Isn't it so much easy?

So what are you waiting for?

Try this for tomorrow's breakfast, I gurantee you will become a expert of this if you follow the instructions I've given.
