Teachers' Day 2021

“The main function of a university is not to grant degrees and diplomas, but to develop the university spirit and advance learning."

— Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan

Parents are a child's first teacher who gives them life lessons and after them comes the Guru or Teacher who leads the child ahead in life. In our young and impressionable years, our teachers played a very important role-they have been our role models, our inspiration, and parent-figures outside of our home who taught us many lessons about life. At times they might be tough on us but, in hindsight, it was only to mould and shape our talents, to make us fight our fears and to work on our weaknesses. In fact, a good teacher not only imparts knowledge to their students but they inspire, encourage and instil curiosity to find solutions to problems. To honour these remarkable people in our lives, Teachers' Day is celebrated as an important day world wide. In India Teachers' Day is celebrated annually on September 5 which also marks Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan's birth anniversary.

History of Teachers' Day

Teachers' Day is marked on the birthday of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. In 1962, when he took the office of the President of India, his students approached him to seek permission to celebrate September 5 as a special day.

He instead asked them to observe this day as Teachers' Day, to recognise the contribution of teachers to society. Ever since, Teacher's Day has been celebrated across schools, colleges, universities and educational institutions. That's how it all began.

Biography of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan

Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born on 5 September 1888 in a Brahmin family in Tirutani village (Madras), Tamil Nadu. His ancestors lived in a town called Sarvapalli, so all the members of Radhakrishnan’s family used the surname Sarvapalli in front of their names. His father’s name was Sarvepalli Veeraswamy and his mother’s name was Sitamma. Radhakrishnan had four brothers and one sister.

• Student life of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan

Radhakrishnan was a brilliant student since childhood. He was sent to the Christian Missionary Institution, Lutheran Mission School, Tirupati, to study between 1896–1900. He received his undergraduate education from Madras Christian College, Madras.

He received a scholarship at Christian College. In 1916 Radhakrishnan did his MA in Philosophy and got a job as Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Madras Residency College. Introduced the entire world to Indian Philosophy through his writings.

• Political Life

In 1947, due to his knowledge and talent, Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was made a member of the Constituent Assembly. He was made the chairman of several universities.

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was about to declare independence at midnight on August 14 -15, but only Radhakrishnan knew about it. He was a non-traditional diplomat. The meeting which went on till late night, he used to attend Dr Radhakrishnan till 10 o’clock because it was time for his sleep.

After the formation of the Soviet Union in 1952, Dr. Radhakrishnan was made Vice President under the Constitution by creating a new post of Vice President. From 1962-1967, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan ji took over as the second President of India.

Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan died on April 17, 1975.

Significance of the day

It is always been maintained that the future of a country lies in the hands of its children. Teachers, as mentors, can mould students into future leaders who then shape the destiny of the nation. They also play a significant role in our lives to help us become successful in our careers and business. They gently nudge us to become good human beings, better members of our society and even ideal citizens of the country. Teachers' Day is actually a celebration to acknowledge the hardship, challenges and the unparalleled role that the teachers play in our lives.

  • They make learning creative so as to make their students understand and imbibe the knowledge quickly.

  • Teachers are always an inspiration to students and give motivation to them in every step.

  • Teachers are the best inspiring sources and the magicians too for the students.

  • They have a greater tolerance for dealing with every type of student within a class.

These are some of the reasons why a teacher requires appreciation and recognition. There are countless reasons to hold an eminent position in every student’s life.

Celebrations

For school students, the day means getting roses, chocolates, gifts including handmade cards to profess their affection for their favourite teachers. For senior students, Teacher’s Day is one of role reversal and celebration. Last year, owing to the Covid-19 pandemic, the schools and colleges were shut and the annual celebrations at schools were replaced with virtual ones. With the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and a threat of Delta variant spreading, many schools continue to operate their online classes.

Hence, virtual wishes and greetings are a perfect way to tell your teachers you love and cherish them, even if you are no longer a school-college going student. This is because teachers are the bedrock upon which any quality education is built and they are perhaps the few people in our lives who rejoice when we, their student, outdo them.

All of this is a way for students to express their love and respect for their teachers.

"Teachers are born with golden hearts, patience like saints, and dedication without any question. Thank you for being my pillar of support."

Happy Teachers' Day!
