Sports are important for the physical and mental well being of humans. Individuals who play sports remain healthy. India has produced many sporting legends like PT Usha, also known as Udanpari, Sachin Tendulkar, also known as Master Blaster, and Major Dhyan Chand, also known as Hockey Wizard.


On August 29, National Sports Day is observed around the country to commemorate the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand. This day is observed to raise awareness about the value of sports and daily activities in everyone’s life, emphasizing the importance of being fit and healthy. Furthermore, it lauds the outstanding support given by the families, coaches, and support staff towards the success of athletes.


Sports not only develop a sense of friendliness and team spirit but also help develop physical toughness and mental health. It shapes the body, makes it strong and active.


Major Dhyan Chand was a legendary figure in Indian and world hockey. He played a very significant role in helping India complete their first hat-trick of Olympic gold medals with victories at the 1928, 1932 and 1936 Summer Olympics.


National Sports Day History


For the first time in 2012, National Sports Day was included in India’s list of national celebrations. India’s National Sports Day is celebrated every year on August 29. Major Dhyan Chand, widely known as the “Hockey Wizard" and “The Magician", was born on August 29, 1905, and National Sports Day is marked to celebrate his birthday.



Dhyan Chand, who was completely dedicated to his craft, started his hockey career with the regimental team of the British Indian Army.

He was a part of the Indian Hockey Team that won gold medals in three consecutive Summer Olympics, in 1928, 1932, and 1936.

According to the official website of Olympics, he used to practice his hockey in the night under the moonlight, after completing his regimental duties in the day. Therefore, he got the name Dhyan 'Chand' because of his enthusiasm for the sport.


Chand was given the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian honour, by the Indian Government in 1956.


Major Dhyan Chand had scored more than 400 international goals in his career from 1926 to 1948 while scoring nearly 1,000 goals In his entire career.


National Sports Day Significance


National Spots Day is celebrated to honour the legacy of Major Dhyan Chand and acknowledge the importance of sports in our life. Various programs, events, seminars etc are organized by the government to raise awareness about the significance of physical activities and sports in life. On this day, multiple awards like the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Arjuna Award, Dhyan Chand Award and the Dronacharya Award are conferred to sporting heroes to honour their contribution to sports.


National Sports Day’s main goal is to promote awareness about the importance of sports and being physically active in daily life. The government has leveraged the event to launch a variety of sports-related projects since the inaugural observance of the day in India in 2012. India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the Khelo India campaign in 2018.
