Janmashtami 2021

“Do everything you have to do,

But not with greed, not with ego,

Not with lust, not with envy but with love, compassion, humility and devotion.”

Wishing you a happy and blessed Krishna Janmashtami.

Jai Shri Krishna!

Janmashtami, which is also known as Krishna Janmashtami or Gokulashtami, is being celebrated by the people of India on Monday. Janmashtami, one of the most popular festivals in India, is celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of Lord Krishan, the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Janmashtami is observed on the eighth day of the Krishna Paksha in the Hindu month of Shraavana or Bhadrapada, which generally falls on August or September. Special events and fairs are organised on this day to celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna.

Janmashthami 2021 Date Puja Timing

The Krishna Paksha Ashtami tithi of Bhadrapada will fall on August 30, hence, the Krishna Janmashtami will be celebrated on this day. The Ashtami tithi begins at 11:25 pm on August 29 and ends at 1:59 am on August 31. Lord Krishna is worshipped during Nishita Kaal as it is believed that he was born at midnight. As per the Panchang, the Nishita Kaal will prevail from 11:59 pm to 12:44 am on August 31.

So this year, the puja timings are between 11:59 pm and 12:44 am, August 31 according to drikpanchang.com.

Devotees perform a detailed puja during midnight which involves 16 steps that are part of the Shodashopachara Puja Vidhi. During Janmashtami fasting, one should not consume grains until the fast is broken the next day after sunrise. The rules are similar to those followed during Ekadashi fasting.

Janmashthami History

Krishna, son of Devaki and Vasudeva Anakadundubhi is believed to have been born in Mathura at midnight on the eighth day of Bhadrapada month. But there was a threat to his life by uncle King Kansa. Following his birth, Krishna’s father took him across the Yamuna to Gokul where his foster parents Nanda and Yashoda lived. This legend is celebrated on Janmashtami–idols of baby Krishna are washed and clothed and placed in a cradle.

Significance of Janmashthami

The festival of Janmashtami is celebrated with much fanfare by Hindus all over the world. According to mythology, Shri Krishna is one of the most powerful human incarnations of Lord Vishnu. Lord Krishna is one such god in Hindu mythology, about whose birth and death a lot has been written. Ever since Shri Krishna took birth on earth in human form, people started worshipping him as the son of God. There is a popular saying in the Bhagavad Gita"Whenever there is the rise of evil and the loss of dharma, I will incarnate to destroy the evil and save the good." The festival of Janmashtami encourages the promotion of goodwill and tye end of of ill-will. This day is celebrated as a holy occasion, a festival of unity and faith.

Janmashtami Celebrations across India

The whole nation comes together to celebrate the birthday of Lord Krishna with much fervour and enthusiasm. It is quite common to see kids dressed up as little Krishna, markets lined up with sweet shops and elegant handis, people preparing for the plays (also known as Ras Leela) and temples being decorated with flowers. On this day, recitations of verses from the holy books, Bhagavata Purana and Bhagavad Gita, are also organised at Hindu shrines. While celebrations throughout the country are mesmerising, some places in India deserve a special mention. It is at these destinations that you can get the true essence of Janmashtami celebrations. Let’s take a look at the different places where this festival finds a special place in the heart of people.

The festival is particularly observed in Mathura and Vrindavan. Celebrations include dance-drama enactments of the life of Krishna, devotional songs, fasting and so on. It is also celebrated in other parts of India like West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala among others.

Janmashtami Puja Vidhi

Shri Krishna was born at 12 midnight on the night of Bhadrapada Krishna Paksha Ashtami due to which this fast starts from morning itself. Worship Lord Krishna with mantras throughout the day and perform the Parana at the end of Rohini Nakshatra. At the midnight, worship Shri Krishna. On this day, wake up early in the morning at Brahma Muhurta and take bath. While taking a bath, meditate on this mantra —
